AN UPDATE ON BOOKMAKERS AND WAGERING AT THE 2024 POWERCOR STAWELL GIFT
Date: 29th February 2024
In line with Victoria Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) policy on a ban on betting on all under-19 sports competitions, Stawell Gift Event Management Limited (SGEM) advises spectators and athletes that wagering will not be conducted at the 2024 Powercor Stawell Gift carnival.
While the attendance of bookmakers has been a mainstay of the Powercor Stawell Gift Carnival, SGEM respects the position of the VGCCC and is committed to the welfare of Under-19 athletes. Bookmakers will not be on-site at the 2024 carnival.
“While we acknowledge that many athletes participating at Stawell are indeed aged over 19 years, many of our athletes, particularly those in our feature sprint events, are under the age of 19. In fact, teenagers are the defending champions in both the Powercor Stawell Gift and Strickland Family Women’s Gift in 2024”, said SGEM Chair, Murray Emerson.
“We are committed to the integrity of the event and the welfare of our participants and spectators. This decision has been made with these priorities in mind”.
The 2024 Powercor Stawell Gift carnival will take place from Saturday March 30 – Monday April 1, 2024. Tickets are on-sale at Ticketek. For those unable to attend, all three days of the carnival will be livestreamed on 7Plus, with Easter Monday finals live and free on Seven Sport.

Poor decision, no betting as well as the $88 3 day pass for entry, makes it very unappealing for spectators, especially if they have no immediate connection to anyone racing. They should be working on a way to fix this debacle many people unhappy and gained some bad publicity which is not what this sport and event needs.

Re: Stawell Betting
Betting on the Gift has become a joke last few years. Bonuses for wins limits the number of chances. Bookies have a small number of athletes attracting wagers. Main chances again are game players encouraged by trainers who don't give a shit about the optics and rort the system. stick out like dogs balls but nothing changes. If you turn up but never win, you're stuffed.
There's good people on the VAL board who want to overhaul the system. but can't because the wolves run the hen house.

The lift bonus system was the best rule they’ve brought in. It encourages people to try every week throughout the year and win the smaller races. Without this all these smaller gifts would suffer with no one trying or low entries. Bonus system makes every gift final throughout the year hotly contested.

You’re either naive or blissfully ignorant if you think runners are trying every week under this system. The tactics are not subtle but rather blatantly shoved in runners, officials and spectators faces; run dead, don’t make the podium, organically get lifted half a meter, win a lift, take the piss out of your competitors come Stawell. The system is what it is and runners/coaches take advantage of this very well.
I do however agree that the lift system is a fantastic initiative which gives incentive for runners to support and win the minor races. It’s just a shame that minor races are supported/more highly regarded than bigger meets such as Maryborough, which doesn’t offer the big lift but SHOULD make up for that with the prestige of the race!
From a betting/bookie perspective. I do also agree that the betting becomes boring when there are only a handful of genuine prospects (due to the lifts) and the rest are regarded as lane fillers. To increase the intrigue, I don’t know why the handicappers don’t think to assist the runners that make the podium week in and out. If you come second or third you lose the ability to get a lift come the next meet. But if you are a runner like Jackson Bennett or Jack Newman why would you not think to just give them some kind of lift come Stawell to make them competitive? It is a lot harder to come second/third repetitively, than it is to make a final and then run like pie just to get a lift for the next meet. Or in other words, instead of punishing them, why are you not giving them some slack come Stawell when they rock up to every meet, running their arses off, but with no gain at the end of the day? Food for thought.

Good to see someone with the acumen to see this farce for what it is. I've never seen so much blatant non-trying than the last few years. It's shameful and frustrating. as the season progresses, it isn't quite as prolific in the later meetings as it is in the pre Australia Day meetings. But its not hard to work out.
Rye was a joke. One guy reminded me of a boxer who's promised 5 grand if he took a dive in the third round.
agree with the Bennett & Newton examples - very poorly treated, showed a lack of awareness and intelligence by the handicapper to not give them parity with those guys who beat them. The bonus system was never designed to disadvantage athletes who try their best but can't win a race, but that's the outcome. Hopefully Colin can fix that his season.

Re: Stawell Betting
How do you expect this system to be fixed?
It’s not really up to Collin to enforce regulations for it to not be rectified.
The same stables and athletes doing what they are doing now will just find another way.
It’s pretty easy to rig this system when you look at individuals runs week in week out and watch them yo-yo.
Yes there are athletes who are genuinely trying to win and or final every week.
Bennet is a good example because he doesn’t give a shit about VAL it’s training for him his more ammo focused however he supports this league every week by turning up and trying to win.
The system can be fixed but there are always ways around it.

BOOKMAKERS: UPDATED INFORMATION
Date: 12th March 2024
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Following consultation with stakeholders, and the review of information which addressed the concerns of Stawell Gift Event Management Limited (SGEM) regarding betting at the Powercor Stawell Gift, SGEM is pleased to advise bookmakers will be on-site at Central Park for the 2024 Powercor Stawell Gift. Spectators will be able to place bets related to adults on open age races at the 2024 carnival, however, minors participating in those events will be excluded from all betting markets.
Rules Regarding Betting on Races which Include Minors
- Spectators will be able to place bets on open age races at the 2024 carnival, however, minors participating in those events will be excluded from all betting markets.
- In the event of a minor winning or being a place getter in an open-age race, the nearest age eligible athlete will be moved up in the placings to determine the place getters (e.g 1st, 2nd, 3rd) in the bookmakers markets only. The on-field result will still apply for actual event placings, Stawell Gift competition records and prize money for participants.
- Minor athletes in open age race fields will be listed on the bookmakers board but will not have a price next to their name (removing them from the board may infer that the athlete has scratched from the event, when they may not have).
- The bookmakers board will have a clearly visible sign advising why athlete with no price next to them doesn’t have a price and that they’re ineligible to place a bet on due to the their age. All runners with a price listed are age eligible (non-minors) for betting.
- If a minor competes in an open-age race at the Powercor Stawell Gift they can not be the subject of betting, with a Minor being is defined in the act as someone under the age of 18.
- Betting on all under 19 sports competitions is banned across the board and therefore there is no betting on all Little Athletics Victoria Races and U19 category races the Stawell Gift.

1% Question
Probably wouldnt happen , but never rule out the possability.
4 athletes under 18 make the final of the Gift.
Therefore how do the bookies decide 3rd placing for all those eachway punters.
Probably needs to be included in the updated information , that to collect from a bookmaker your selection must run in the final or else you forfeit any money.
Petty I know , probable NO , possible YES.
