Who will win the 2023 Stawell 120m Women's Gift?
2023 Stawell 120m Women's Gift
Just under two weeks until the 141st running of the Powercor Stawell Gift. It's the race we've all been waiting for! Lets keep this thread to tips/predictions only, in recent weeks the conversations on the polls have been getting off track.
109 entries this year, 14 heats if my maths is correct. Naa Anang and Bree Masters will both share the backmark off scratch. Mia Gross 0.25m, Maddie Coates 1.5m, Hayley Reynolds 1.75m and last years winner Carla Bull has 2m. Previous winners include Alexia Loizou 2.75m, Elizabeth Forsyth 3.75m, Grace O'Dwyer 7m, Liv Ryan 7.75m, and Hayley Orman 8.25m.
Who takes it out this year? I'll start us off, Admin's tip is Layla Watson who won the Warrnambool Gift earlier this season. Go well Layla!
Excited to see all of your predictions.

Re: 2023 Stawell 120m Women's Gift
Only 10 chances or so to make the final
Hastings
Pasquali
Watson
Murray
May
Kinnersley
O’Dwyer
Masters (ahead of Naa purely because of her grass form)
Matzer/Mannix-Power (might be next years go, along with Rutherford)
Keratianos, Carty, Henderson all miss out on being a top 12 seed in my opinion
Hastings is my winner, Pasquali and Watson close

Layla to take the win here, sensational 70m at Ballarat was enough to convince me.
Again has been set for this race a long way out, was unlucky last year due to injury and 12mths later is even better prepared and ready for the W.

Didn’t realise Olivia May wasn’t eligible for her lift. Ran 13.822 at Maryborough which means she couldn’t receive her half lift.
Does that half a metre cost her a spot in the final?
What do you think Jim?

I’m pretty sure she got her half metre Dwight. Both Maryborough and Beachside had half metre field lifts applied

Don't know if thats the case H-man. she had 10.5m at Maryborough and has 10.5m at Stawell.
UPDATE: just remembered that the field was lifted for Maryborough for Bree. so she has received her 0.5m. Well that suggests she's running at least 13.8, Bree should be doing the same.

Yep she did Dwight ,but her mark was 10m at Maryborough and she went to 10.5m because of the field lift for Masters. Pretty sure her winning mark from Beachside 100m would have been inflated too for the field lift for Anang. Surely her lift would be generated from her actual mark and not the inflated mark.

Re: 2023 Stawell 120m Women's Gift
Olivia May runs adjusted 13.82sec, her win at Stawell 70m last year was 8.5sec,
Comparison Layla Watson runs first run of season in warnambool adjusted 13.84, at ballarat breaks ceiling for 70m 8.26 and appears a lift received. not to mention the smashing 400m win at Beachside.
Bella runs 13.85 no lift? runs a blistering 200m at Bendigo (synthetic), maybe this counted. Full 200 time equates to 24.1 (no ceiling times for 200m women?)

I believe there was a 0.5m field lift at Rye also for Basic I think from memory. Bella was on 6.75m at the time and ran off 7.25m at Rye. So I think she has her lift.

Just did a search. Appears made final at Aussies beach sprint. Classy.Kicker wrote:May for the win
Then a search on YouTube. A session of over speed with Bree. Impressive and only last week.
Think I’m siding with May for the win.
Not just an influencer. Good athlete with a handy mark. May and Bella have been racing 100-120 consistently. Watson hasn’t done one
This year? Could be wrong. But if not racing the pressure could be the undoing. Racing 200 and 400 it appears but different race.

Bree Masters had the field lifted .5 for her at Maryborough, ran 13.83 then finished third in final. Masters has since ran a pb yet the field has not been lifted for stawell. Bree has essentially been given a half metre lift for coming third at Maryborough, a lift that no established runner can possibly get. On a better track at stawell and in pb form has been handicapped to go under ceiling.

Masters is a quality athlete and can't wait to see what she can do off scratch this year.
Final will be:
Masters
Mannix-power
O'Dwyer
Hastings
Pasquali
Spencer

Emily Carty has to be a sneaky chance to make a final. Went toe to toe with Ballarat girls and blitzed them in a 13.83 on a not so fast gift track. Goes up an extra quarter and I reckon she's just about booked a spot in the final.
Odds anyone? I'm putting down some money on her

Good athlete but rate her training partners and their chances more.

Emily Carty is no chance, 1. Perth beaches were so soft and will smash anyone's legs who had multiple races, and 2. was last seen doing extra dance sessions at 4am in the morning with bottle in hand, followed by 2 days of partying on a boat. Apparently, some people are not interested in 40k, or not turning up.

If you can’t beat your training partners, drinking and partying on a boat is probably the next best option. She has had a good season.

Cmon Scott, whos to say this wasn’t her preparation leading into Ballarat!! Seems like she’s partying and beach sprinting year round. Don’t change the winning formula… Carty to beat May
