Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
BENEFITS OF RUNNING THE 2022 BAY SHEFFIELD CARNIVAL OVER THREE
DAYS AT ACH GROUP STADIUM (27-28/12) AND COLLEY RESERVE (29/12)
Collect entry fees at ACH Group Stadium to help fund return to Colley Reserve.
Provides opportunities to run over distances at ACH Group Stadium which are not suitable for Colley
Reserve (300m/3200m).
Three days allows program to expand to allow all veterans and junior races to be split into separately
male and female races, as well as an expansion of the Invitational concept to all categories to reward
runners who regularly support the League.
Allows the collaboration with the Glenelg Football and Cricket Clubs to continue – marketing
advantages, use of venue for dinners, administration office availability in the lead up, assistance with
catering.
Reduced set up costs at Colley Reserve (expenses for 1 day instead of 2 days).
Allows the Bay Sheffield Men’s and Women’s 120m races to be run at its traditional home.
Exposure for sponsors at two different sites.
Expanding to a three-day program provides incentive for interstate visitors to stay longer (which will
appeal to South Australian Tourism Commission).
Glenelg Oval provides a back-up option in the unlikely scenario if there are problems with COVID19 or
extreme hot weather.
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Ensure council prepare both Glenelg Oval and Colley Reserve adequately.
Use ACH Group Stadium as storage facility and administration hub in the lead up to the event.
No running on December 26 to allow officials to mark tracks at both venues.
Corporate catering/VIP area only for main day at Colley Reserve (suggestion is for Life Members to be
specifically looked after in rotunda separate to the corporate area).
Licence needed for Colley Reserve.
Bay Sheffield winners’ breakfast to be held at ACH Group Stadium on the morning of the second day,
70m winners’ dinner to be held that night.
Transporting of signage/marquees/race equipment to be done by Atlas on the morning of the main day.
Consider hiring labour to put up signage at Colley Reserve.
Council to erect fence and flagpoles on morning of main day and dismantle once event is finished.
Tony Owen has confirmed he is OK with the same arrangements for last year at ACH Group Stadium and
can set up audio at Colley Reserve for the one day.
Ollie Wurm can fill in for Terry McAuliffe if Terry needs a break during the three days.
BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS
Two days at ACH Group Stadium allows for two days of entry fees (proposed $10k income).
Reduced infrastructure costs due to one day only at Colley Reserve (no overnight security, only one day
hire for toilets/marquees/cleaners).
An estimated $14k extra will be available for prizemoney with the 2 venue option as opposed to only
using Colley Reserve.
Increased number of races (45 instead of 32) means increased revenue from Bay Sheffield nominations
and likely increase from nominations for lead up meets due to invitational races.
Increased number of races means increased total level of prizemoney needed or reduced amount per
race. With a need to buy an extra 13 sashes, extra sash donors will be needed.
There will be costs for Atlas to move equipment/signage between venues.
Increased costs for extra day with racecallers, sound technician and first aid.
It is recommended that there is no need for roving entertainers. Paid radio/social media advertising
should be reconsidered.

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
So whats the thought?
Should be over 2 days at Colley. The end. IMO
Its a case of less is more, not more is more. Stacks of athletes will still want to run at Colley but miss out with plenty no doubt will opt to just run on day 3.
Paying to enter of day 1 and day 2 to fill the shortfall in sponsorship.

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
We were told a deal hadnt been done with Glenelg Oval, looks to me like there was.
I cant see people wanting to pay to watch little A's, under 18's and over 35's run at Glenelg Oval.
If you are a sprinter but not good enough for the 120 open you run the restricted and the 70, both of which ae at Glenelg Oval.
If you are good enough in the 120's, the Colley along with 550's and 1600's and that is it for Colley. I think Colin must have been a boundary umpire, always on the fence!

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
Two days at Colley.
I think we will see what the athletes want, and that will be calling for a Special meeting to get what they want.

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
In todays world you cant have Over 30 women and Over 35 men.
Then go and put an Over 35 race on for all.
12noon 1600m Over 35 Final and Presentation
So a women who is 34 who competes in the woman over 30 races then cant compete in the over 35 1600m.
Theres a mascot race and I bet I know whos going to compete in the goofy costume.

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
I HAVE A GREAT IDEA
With the Mort Daly Pre Bay, lets begin the day at Glenelg Oval at 10.00am, charge an entrance fee and have Ollie call the races there.
Racing at Glenelg would continue until 1.00pm
We then stop for lunch
We then move down to Colley and race from 2.30 to 5.30 .
Terry would call the 3 hrs down at Colley and it would give the 120m athletes a run on the track.

Re: Bay Sheffield 2022 decision
Happy to report that at the first meeting of the new SAAL committee it was unanimously agreed that we would revert to a day day carnival at Colley reserve on the 27th and 28th of December.
More to come !
