Who will win the 2022 Stawell 120m Gift?
Stawell 120m Men's Gift 2022
Here we go folks, this is what it all comes down to. The 2022 Stawell Gift!
The final race for the season, and the final poll for the season. With 132 entries, and only 50 options allowed, it was difficult to fit all athletes in. Those who have won gifts this season have earnt themselves a singular spot. Most others have been grouped in 3's or 4's.
New Zealand athlete Eddie Nketia will run off scratch and will be your backmarker.
Additionally, the Talking Pros Admin will also be running a little competition. If anyone can correctly guess the SIX FINALISTS AND WINNER - Admin will happily shout you a drink at the Gift Hotel on Easter Monday (first in best dressed ).
An example of what your entry should include:
Nketia - Winner
Doran
Hale
Murphy
Chico
Law
Good luck and get tipping!

I don't think you have enough faith in the pro runners donatello!! Those amature runners are gonna have to be running PB's to be anywhere near some of the guys that have taken lifts this year.
It's gonna be a hell of an invitational race though.

Plenty of faith Dwight, Green I think after Wang looks the goods imo. Doran running 10.28 into a -1.5 wind on a wet track... off 0.5 RPM would have hime around 12.28s, also a very strong 200 runner so reckon he's moving even faster over the 120 and can definitely back up races.
Law running 20.63 less than a few weeks ago and 10.49 in the same 100m race as Doran above. 12.4-ish maybe but again imo a stronger 200 runner so will benefit for the slightly longer race. Basing both of these picks off their runs over the weekend in some shoddy conditions. Despard was in the mix as well so could challenge here.
Green solid at Wang and I think St Albans 70m, had a touch more up the sleeves at Wang so keen to see and I think can run 12.1-ish which is what I think will win it.
Griffin great run at St. Albans, ran a max RPM of .1102 I think at Warrnambool which is notoriously quick, off 9.75m to run 12.1 would need that to be around .1097. I think he will be there-abouts in the final.
Kerr runs some incredible races at Maribyrnong and 70m at Geelong, however again off 9.25 needs to be around .1092 RPM. Definitely in the final in my mind.
Vi has been in cracking form and 11.1 pace off the limit puts him around that 12.2 mark as well.
I think a lot will depend on how the semi's get drawn as well, Lindstrom had a great run at Terang and will be a big threat off 7.75 if he's in .109 RPM form he'll also sit around that 12.2 area but unfortunately you can only pick 6 :p !

I think the performing track sprinters will do better than you've predicted. Doran 10.28 into a 1.5m headwind on a rain day says he's going to run 10.15 at worst on a good day with no wind. Over 120m the way he finishes he's going to go 12.00-12.05, take off a tenth for his mark + hands in front of line and you're looking at him running 11.90-11.95, even if you add 2 tenths for grass you're still looking at a run in the 12.1's. He is going to be in the mix. Likewise with Despard, hasn't displayed the same 100m form of Doran but gets to start 0.75m in front and is a proven threat uphill at Central Park. Expect both of these athletes to be extremely close to the final.

Cmon man, Doran is not running 11.9 on a grass track. You’re maths is extremely inaccurate.
11.90 off 0.5m would need Jake to go at an RPM of 0.0995 (aka 10.00over the 100m with his hands behind the line)
And this isn’t with a track adjustment…
My point is that Doran ain’t going 11.9, probably isn’t even going 12.2 on the up hill grass surface. Won’t make the final.

This is with no track allowance by the way. And it’s incorrect. You could also say that his 10.05 with a 3.7 tail wind/great day, would have been a 10.25 or slower with no wind. Let’s not forget that asafa powell ran 12.3s off scratch. Josh Ross never went quicker than 12.3s off scratch. Kim collins, jack hale, bresland, ect ect ect. They have all been there and have not done it. Doren is an excellent sprinter, however better have come and tried, and better have failed. He runs 12.3 is my prediction. If this was browning we were talking about, well that’s a different discussion

No excuses for any AV boys here. They have been handicapped to ceiling (12.25) which is faster than 95% of the field. Given the extra 2m allowance from track to grass also. Very accommodating! And they should run well

Re: Stawell 120m Men's Gift 2022
Stone cold, you might need some work on your calculations. None of the “AV boys” (weird term btw as most of them are not from Victoria ) are handicapped to run 12.25 based on the current rules. Do I think a couple of them will go ok? I hope so! I’d love to see a couple in the final. Will they run 12.25? Maybe 1. But hilariously wrong and just factually incorrect to say they are handicapped to 12.25 based on the rules. Not one of them is.

His 10.28 (-1.5) in the rain was a week after nationals when he ran his windy 10.05, and he was further ahead of the majority of the field. He is on the way up..
Also no track allowance? I clearly said add 2 tenths for grass? Collins was an explosive starter he tired towards the end of the race, Bresland a realistic 10.4-10.5 runner and Hale hasn't run at Stawell since he was a 10.4 runner. Asafa was overweight, unfit and injured when he raced. Swain a 10.3 runner at the time lost less than a tenth to powell on times that year. Ross also never raced at Stawell in better than 10.2's shape.
If you know much about runners at the level of Doran you will know they cover that last 20m in less than 2 seconds and their RPM improves with the extra 20%
Doran and Despard run like they have been and they both go sub 12.20, Other backmarkers are going to be hit and miss.

Re: Stawell 120m Men's Gift 2022
All these amateurs times are exaggerated by use of new technology sprint spikes and mostly tailwinds, that wasn't a -1.5, speaking to the those at the track. New spikes mostly advantage on rubber. Not so much on grass, Also a slightly wet track makes no difference on rubber, there is a argument that it might provide faster times due to reducing surface friction.
Uphill on grass , the ones from inside 1m won't be breaking 12.3s.

Top 3
Kerr, rpm 10.69
Lindstrom rpm 10.69
Mckenna rpm 10.68
All off handicaps that would win a heap of past stawell gifts. Well played and improved coaches of first 3.

Re: Stawell 120m Men's Gift 2022
Here we go again
Another Stawell gift overrun by a stable that seems to control and dictate the handicappers
From reading this forum, something that is blatantly clear to us all.
From starting the season over half a second off the pace to running, in the wet, fastest ever electric time
And it’s the stable at it again
A training partner missing the final after being heavily favoured, perhaps that was coaches instructions
Do we talk about the 200.
After impressive showings in the heats, 2 members of that same stable looking likely to go 1-2 in the 200. So, assumably from coaches instructions one of the 2 goes over half a second slower to miss the final.
Can’t wait To see the stable win the 120-200 double at their event next year
For all the glorious winners aspirations of running national, perhaps he should watch the back markers and have a look at the real athletes
I know I’m not the only one who notices this. But I’m sure I’ll get some negative feedback from those who received generous handicaps this season
Good on you and your coach. Hope you’re proud.
Good luck buying a house for 40k.

Harry Kerr is a very nice man and well deserved winner. Did he have to much ? Of course. Everyone said it. But I’m happy for him. How can you not take motivation out of a performance like that! Handicapper will learn from his mistakes. Enjoy pre season.
