Wowee that Masters 300m.....

43.44 (54) Essendon 2022 (Track)
DNS (56) Warrnambool 2022
34.86 (79) Warrnambool Age Graded 2022
DNS (56) Terang 2022
No Time (56) Waverley 2022
40.80 (62!) Geelong 2022 (8m lift off one run from 56)
41.11 (62) Maryborough 2023
39.24 (62) St Albans 2023
42.77 (62) Rye 2023 (NAP-T)
39.91 (64!) Frankston 2023 (NAP-T)
35.75! (74!) Wangaratta 2023 (1st Place)

How do you get nearly 20m lift in 7 races and 2 of those races are NAP-T's? The only thing I can think of here is they've placed him on 74 when it was supposed to be 64.... Otherwise that is a terrible move from the handicappers...

My understanding is the starting handicap of 54m was incorrect and should have been 62m hence the initial adjustment.

In a sport of centimetres, I feel that the photo finish system isn’t 100% effective. How can you possibly distinguish a 0.001 or 0.002 difference between athletes. They put the line on what they believe to be the chest and shoulders, but the athletes are wearing clothing and baggy silks. So it really just comes down to the judgment of the person operating the photo finish. If it is believed to be lower than 0.003 difference between 1sts and 2nd, it should be deemed to close and called a dead heat. Then have those two runners do a ‘run off’ to decide the winner, like in the old days. How exciting is that ! Or if they wish to split. Food for thought

Stewards report/ reviews will be fascinating this , some improved 9m or 1 whole second when comparing RPMS at Wang. Get the popcorn out folks.

This is the problem when you go hard/ tough with stewarding, they end up backing themselves into a corner. If they are not consistent. This is opens up a can of worms.

I've been saying since the Carty-Cowling/Versace race at Stawell that all league singlets and silks should have a sensor in the chest and the finish lines fitted with technology to register them. This takes any doubt out of it and we should be taking 'discretion' out of any area of the sport possible. We're all wearing VAL singlets again now and in this day and age it shouldn't be too costly an exercise to make it happen. With runners travelling at the speed they are the singlets are almost always pressed against the chest, it would take a gale force tail wind for this not to be the case.

If we're not going to do something like this the very least that needs to be done is a new finish line without gates, similar to the Stawell circular finish. Using a still photo or even video to determine whose chest is in front with poles between runners is an absolute farce. This could also be made much lighter and easier to set up/dismantle these days than what's currently in use and could display the race or meeting name and/or sponsor like at Stawell.

Good idea, pretty sure many errors made in photo finish. I mean they don't even know the IAAF rules, which states

3.3.2 ensure that the Judge making decisions is quite clear about what constitutes the “torso”
asfar as photo finish is concerned. The exact location of the border line between the upper
arm / shoulder and the “torso” would vary depending on the development of the upper
body of an individual athlete and would not therefore be totally consistent. Based on
anatomy, we can say that the endpoint of the torso is the outer end / articulation of the
collarbone (clavicle). Normally, thisis approximately at the border of the middle and outer
third of the distance between the neck and the peak of the shoulder. On the below two
images, the arrows show the endpoint of the torso.

I know errors have been made by picking the shoulder, this is really bad when cases athletes are twisting. Its defined by IAAF regulations that its the torso and that ends at the collarbone.

I like the gates. They are unique to pro running. We need cameras on both sides so a runner can’t be obscured and the camera operator has to guess.
